In the Classical Trivium, we encourage students to ‘understand the truth’ in the Grammar phase; ‘reason in truth’ in the Logic/Dialectic phase; and ‘persuade in truth’ in the Rhetoric phase. Our prayer is that, when our education process is complete, our students are fully equipped to ‘walk in truth,’ or take every step in a spirit of wisdom in the Lord.
As I prepared a message for my daughter’s wedding recently, I focused upon the final verses of Ephesians 5, where wives are to be submissive to their own husbands, and husbands are to love their wives as unto the Christ. I always make it a point when preparing any Scriptural message to closely examine the passage in its larger context. In this case, the verses preceding the marriage advice exhorted the Christians at Ephesus to “walk as wise.” I commend Ephesians 5 to you in its entirety.
In the gospel of Christ, we understand that our righteousness (and indeed the accompanying wisdom) comes to those who believe in Christ from God Himself. The receipt of this gift enables the Spirit of Christ to guide our paths so as to “walk as wise.” At Evangelical Christian Academy, we fervently pray for our students, that Christ would indwell their hearts, thus enabling them to “walk as wise.”
Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit, addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart, giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of ourLord Jesus Christ, submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ.
Ephesians 5:15-21
Allow me to highlight some characteristics of those who “walk as wise:”
- They make the best use of time;
- They understand the will of the Lord;
- They remain sober-minded;
- They are filled with the Spirit;
- They address one another with a spiritual focus;
- They make melody to the Lord with their hearts;
- They give thanks to the Lord in everything, and;
- They submit to one another out of reverence to Christ.
If the Spirit of Christ is in us, these characteristics will be present and growing! As humans, we pray to continually grow in sanctification, being drawn nearer to Christ in holiness. Let us remind each other to rely on Christ’s Spirit for this growth. Let us also thank Him in everything.
These are some of the things that make Christianity unique. They are also the things that make the ECA schooling experience unique. Join me in prayer that our students would “walk as wise.”
