Collegium Homeschool Collaborative

Christian, Classical, Collaborative
Collegium (kuh-LEG-ih-uhm) partners with parents to cultivate students who are encouraged in Christ, enlivened by study, and equipped for service, all to the glory of God. Classical, Collaborative

Collegium Homeschool Collaborative at Evangel Christian Academy exists to support Christian, classical homeschooling families in Kindergarten through 12th grade. We are a place where like-minded homeschoolers learn side by side as we seek to“love God in tota mente tua” (with all of your mind. Matthew 22:37).

Within this community, students grow together as they encounter ideas that shape their hearts, strengthen their minds, and reveal God’s truth woven through every subject. From the Grammar stage through the Rhetoric stage, students engage in ideas that form both their thinking and their character.

Classical education in the Collegium Homeschool Collaborative includes a full range of the liberal arts and sciences, with special emphasis on the history of Western thought. At the Grammar level, students build a strong foundation through good books, chants, songs, jingles, call and response, catechisms, movement, and frequent review through memorization.

As students move into the Dialectic and Rhetoric levels, they turn to the Great Books of Western literature and enter the enduring conversation of history through Socratic dialogue, debate, and discussion. They pursue foundational questions such as “How did I get here?” “What is the purpose of life?” and “How should I live?” As students wrestle with these ideas, they learn to think with depth, humility, and clarity, allowing truth to shape them from the inside out.

When on campus two to three days a week, students learn from teachers who are passionate about Christian education and the formation of virtue. Collegium teachers integrate faith and learning in Christ-centered classrooms, cultivating both the hearts and minds of their students. Classes are intentionally kept small, fostering personalized instruction within a challenging classical curriculum. In partnership with parents on at-home days, collaborative education at Collegium upholds the God-given responsibility of parents as the primary educators of their children.

Our hope and prayer is that through this shared work, we pass on an education that glorifies God, nurtures wisdom and virtue, and supports parents in the formation of each child’s heart, mind, and character. In all that we do, Collegium strives to pursue excellence in classical Christian education, helping students recognize that “in Christ are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.” Colossians 2:3

What is Collegium?

Since 2002, Collegium has partnered with homeschooling families in the Colorado Springs area to provide a rich classical Christian education rooted in timeless truth and community.

Families who partner with Collegium choose a rigorous curriculum grounded in the classical tradition. Carefully selected Christian teachers plan and teach lessons on campus days and provide lesson plans and assignments for at-home learning. This model guides families through an integrated course of study at a steady pace throughout the year. On campus, students benefit from a structured learning environment, age-appropriate instruction, and the joy of learning alongside peers.

Throughout the week, parents serve as co-teachers, helping their children complete lessons prepared by the classroom teacher. This collaborative model allows parents to focus on discipling and connecting with their children without carrying the full weight of curriculum selection, lesson planning, and assessment.

Though the collaborative model may seem similar to other educational options, it is distinct in important ways.

Collegium is not:

A part-time school
While students attend classes two to three days a week, education takes place five days a week through a cohesive classical Christian curriculum, with parents remaining actively involved as the primary educators.

A homeschool group or co-op
Though Collegium shares the community aspect of a homeschool group, it emphasizes the full range of the liberal arts and sciences, with particular focus on the history of Western thought. Core courses such as Latin, logic, writing, and the humanities are required at nearly every level and taught by subject-area teachers.

Professional tutoring
Tutoring addresses individual skill development. Collegium instead provides a shared learning environment where students pursue wisdom together through the study of the Western Christian tradition and other formative disciplines.

A traditional private school.
Though part of Evangel Christian Academy, the Collegium collaborative program requires a greater level of parental involvement and shared responsibility.

What is the history of Collegium?

In 2001, our founder, Beth Harvey, gathered homeschooling parents to read and discuss the Great Books of the Western canon in preparation for teaching their children. Recognizing that classical education is not an easy path to walk alone, she expanded this vision in 2003 by establishing a study center focused on Latin, logic, and Western civilization.

Since then, the community has grown to include additional classes, younger students, and graduating classes. What has remained constant is our commitment to making classical Christian education accessible for future generations.

What is Classical Christian Education?

Drawing from the heritage of the Greeks and Romans, classical education seeks to pass on a way of life, what the ancients called paideia. This tradition forms both knowledge and character by cultivating virtues such as prudence, justice, temperance, fortitude, faith, hope, and charity. As students grow in wisdom and virtue, they learn not only what to think, but how to live wisely and faithfully.

Families who choose Collegium are choosing an education aimed at true paideia, grounded in Scripture and enriched by the liberal arts. The seven liberal arts are “not merely subjects to be mastered, but sure and certain ways of forming in the soul the intellectual virtues necessary for acquiring true wisdom” (Clark and Jain, 1).

Collegium Frequently Asked Questions

Collegium offers a vigorous classical Christian curriculum. The scope and sequence, book lists, textbooks, and structure of our program depend on the grade level and age of the student. For more information on our curriculum, please see the curriculum map and course descriptions HERE.

Collegium meets on the Evangel Christian Academy Upper School campus within the Village Seven Presbyterian Church complex.

For our younger students (roughly kindergarten through 3rd grade), classes meet on Mondays and Wednesdays. Once a student progresses to Grammar 3 (approximately 4th grade) and beyond, we add a half day on Fridays. Most Dialectic and Rhetoric level students are on campus the full two and half days each week as they choose to add additional classes to their schedules.

The length of a Collegium school day depends on the courses a family selects. Generally, school starts at 8:00am with Coram Deo and can end as late as 3:00pm on Mondays and Wednesdays. On Fridays, school generally starts at 8:00am and can end as late as 1:30pm. Exact times are based on class enrollment.

Our program is a five-day program that is balanced between in-school days and homeschool days. Tuesdays and Thursdays are Collegium homeschool days, when parent(s) take over and teach their students. While we do provide work guidance and curriculum for those days, they are full school days and shouldn’t be viewed as off days or homework-only days.

Our partnership with Evangel Christian Academy provides the opportunity for a full school sports experience for our students. At the Dialectic and Rhetoric levels, we currently offer competitive golf, volleyball, cross country, track, baseball, basketball, and soccer.Participation in sports is a core component of a full classical curriculum. It trains the body, spirit, and imagination in ways that are pivotal to educating the whole person (Clark and Jain, 28–31). Therefore, we encourage students to participate as they and their families are able. It also has the added benefit of introducing new friendships and helping students feel connected to the broader Evangel community.

Absolutely. Our lunch and study periods are supervised by parent volunteers, and we ask each family to cover five volunteer slots per semester. Occasionally, there are opportunities to substitute teach in our classrooms. Parents are not required to teach classes in order to participate in our program.

Yes, our member families can opt to comply with CO law by homeschooling under the private school umbrella of ECA-Collegium. Once students reach Grammar 5 (approximately 6th grade), we keep grades and can provide report cards upon request. For a fee, high school transcripts are available for high school courses taken at Collegium at the Upper School level.

You can find our 2025-2026 tuition and fee information HERE.

Collegium Homeschool Collaborative families are provided with a list of curriculum and books and are expected to acquire them by the first day of school. This allows families to take advantage of curriculum sales, used materials, or to borrow books from libraries or other families.

What our Families Say…

“Evangel Christian Academy has been the perfect fit for our family. The strong Biblical foundation continually woven into the teaching, curriculum, and interactions perfectly complements the values we teach our boys at home. It has been a pleasure to journey hand-in-hand with this special school as our boys develop in mind, body, soul, and spirit..”
